Machinery Breakdown (MBD).

Protection structured around real-world risk.

Specialized engineering insurance protecting critical production machinery, electrical transformers, boilers, turbines, and CNC lines against sudden, unforeseen internal mechanical or electrical failure while at work or at rest.

CRITICAL VULNERABILITIES & EXPOSURES

Real-world risks this policy is engineered to solve.

Commercial and personal risks rarely follow idealized assumptions. These are the critical financial pitfalls, claim traps, and operational vulnerabilities that proper policy structuring actively mitigates.

High-Impact Vulnerability01

Electrical Short-Circuit & Rapid Flame Spread

High electrical loads, aging transformer panels, or overheated machine bearings igniting nearby packaging or combustible stock.

Impact: Total plant destruction, structural buckling, and immediate halt of all ongoing operations.
Policy Solution: Standard Fire & Special Perils (SFSP) with Reinstatement Value and Debris Removal endorsements.
High-Impact Vulnerability02

The Underinsurance & Average Clause Trap

Insuring factory buildings or machinery at historic balance-sheet book value instead of true current replacement cost.

Impact: In a ₹10 Cr loss with 40% underinsurance, the insurer legally pays only ₹6 Cr, leaving ₹4 Cr uncovered.
Policy Solution: Pre-quote valuation benchmarking and Agreed Value / Reinstatement Value clauses with escalation extensions.
High-Impact Vulnerability03

Monsoon Inundation & Flash Flooding (STFI)

Severe cloudbursts, blocked municipal drains, or river overflows inundating ground-level factory floors and basements.

Impact: Submerged electrical motors, rusted CNC spindles, and completely ruined raw materials.
Policy Solution: Storm, Tempest, Flood & Inundation (STFI) cover with low deductible thresholds and rapid survey advocacy.
UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

Protection begins with the right questions.

These are discussion points, not a promise that every risk is covered. Final cover depends on policy wording and insurer acceptance.

01

Electrical Breakdown

Short-circuits, voltage surges, arcing, insulation failure, lightning flashover, and motor winding burnout

02

Mechanical Failure

Centrifugal force rupture, shaft fracture, fatigue breakdown, overheating, and balance-weight displacement

03

Operator Inadvertence & Malice

Accidental damage caused by human error, lack of skill, improper handling, or foreign bodies falling into machinery

04

Internal Hydraulic & Pneumatic Breakdown

Hydraulic cylinder blowout, pressure valve failure, and lubrication system blockage

05

Coverage at Work and Rest

Protection while machinery is in active operation, idling, being cleaned, or during maintenance overhaul within premises

06

Key Add-on Extensions

Air freight charges for emergency replacement parts, express delivery, and overtime wages for rapid repairs

WHO IT MAY SUIT

Built around your real-world exposure.

The right structure starts with understanding your assets, operations, people and contractual responsibilities.

Manufacturing factories, industrial processing units, and heavy engineering workshops
Power plants, captive diesel generator (DG) installations, and sub-stations
Cold storage chains, dairy processing plants, and food packaging industries
Hospitals and diagnostic facilities utilizing MRI, CT scanners, and medical chillers
Commercial establishments with high-capacity elevators, central HVAC chillers, and pumps
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Details that make a difference.

Compare more than price. Review limits, deductibles, exclusions and policy conditions.

01

Sum Insured must strictly reflect New Replacement Value (NRV)—including current new machine price, freight, customs, and erection costs

02

Maintaining active Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) and OEM-recommended preventive maintenance logbooks

03

Separating routine wear-and-tear consumables (belts, filters, lubricants, cutting tools) from insured capital components

04

Reviewing machinery testing deductibles and excess thresholds based on machine horsepower and voltage rating

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

Need more clarity? Send us your requirement and our team can help explore the next step.

Ask our team
Why do I need MBD insurance if I already have Fire & Property Insurance?

Standard Fire & Property policies strictly exclude internal electrical or mechanical breakdown. They only cover external fire damage. If an electric motor burns its windings or a turbine shaft cracks due to centrifugal stress, a fire policy pays nothing. MBD insurance specifically covers these internal operational failures.

What is the basis of Sum Insured in Machinery Breakdown insurance?

The sum insured must always be the current New Replacement Value (NRV) of the machinery, including freight, customs duty, and installation charges. Partial loss repairs are settled on a 'new-for-old' basis without depreciation on replacement parts, provided the machine is insured at full NRV.

Are operator errors and lack of skill covered under MBD?

Yes. Sudden and accidental physical damage resulting from operator negligence, lack of skill, or inadvertence is covered under standard Indian MBD wording.
